Das Dorf- und Schulmuseum befindet sich im Zentrum Schönwaldes. Es ist in der ehemaligen Dorfschule untergebracht. Im Jahre 1823 wurde das Gebäude als Kirchspielschule errichtet und galt in seiner Ausstattung mit Holzfußboden und einem Sitzplatz für fast jedes Kind als die modernste Schule im damaligen Herrschaftsgebiet der Oldenburger Herzöge.
Die Schule bot Platz für zwei Klassenräume (Elementar- und Hauptschüler) und eine Lehrerwohnung. 150 Jahre lang wurde hier die Dorfjugend unterrichtet, dann zogen Lehrer und Schüler 1973 in die neu errichtete Dörfergemeinschaftsschule um. Das alte Gebäude wurde nach und nach zum Museum.
An die Zeit als Dorfschule erinnert der mit historischem Schulmobiliar komplett eingerichtete frühere Klassenraum der Hauptschüler.
In den übrigen Räumen des Hauses werden den Besuchern Einblicke in die Arbeits- und Lebenswelt der Bauern und Handwerker, der Hausfrauen und Kinder des späten 19. und frühen 20.Jahrhunderts gegeben.
